This is gonna be a brief, and admittedly weak weekend reads lovahs! I got back from another mess of travel on Wednesday (what a mess it was too!) and y’all are headed off for BBQs and beaches and vacations so, let’s get real, you probably won’t be reading much this weekend. Me? I’ll be staycationing, drinking a lot of rosé and hopefully getting some sun. Dear Mother Nature, Please turn the DC weather around for me! <3 Alejandra.

Whatever you guys end up doing, have fun! And Christ almighty, be safe!

It was a big week for social/media – what with Yahoo! buying Tumblr and all. Oh and Flickr revamped itself…and then died.

See? See why I love Midnight In Paris? Because I want to be friends with Hemingway and Fitzgerald! They make fun of each other’s junk and write funny notes in their manuscripts!

I know print is dying, but jesus, Robert Sietsema, restaurant critic and all around amazing food-as-cultural-marker writer for The Village Voice was laid off.

So funny because it’s so true: things girls say to each other in the bathroom.

20-somethings. Don’t waste away your 20s. I completely agree with this TED Talk.

This poignant speech about why we still need feminism made me tear up.

Chris Christie, get your state’s shit together. I might not like scotch, but still!

Alright, that’s all I have for now. Next week should be fun – I have a #GSD post about mean girls and with me catching up on my Feedly and Instapaper there will be much to share! Here’s a cheeky jam from She & Him to start your long weekend lovahs!

So I’ve been taking notes for this post since I turned 30 last year. I figured, instead of doing a “30 things I learned by 30″ post I’d do something a little more…I don’t know. Then I turned 31 and I couldn’t really bring myself to post anything. Then it was Mother’s Day and I … Continue reading »

So I’ve been taking notes for this post since I turned 30 last year. I figured, instead of doing a “30 things I learned by 30″ post I’d do something a little more…I don’t know. Then I turned 31 and I couldn’t really bring myself to post anything. Then it was Mother’s Day and I was reading my notes thinking, “Hm! I’ve learned so much of this from my mother, maybe I’ll do it as a Mother’s Day post.” And I still couldn’t bring myself to post anything.

See, I don’t want to come across as trite. Or worse, cheesy. I really didn’t want to be as boring as <del>some</del> <del>many</del> most of the other posts like this I’ve read. But then, I find myself repeating a lot of these lessons, advice and truisms to friends over and over again, so clearly this shit isn’t getting old or less relevant. Also my mother keeps repeating some of this stuff to me so it’s also not exactly sinking in over here all the time either.

I’ll give it a go though. Call it what you will – things I’ve learned. Things my mom taught me. Silver linings from the shitty times. Or, maybe, 22 things I learned by 31.

Your time gets more precious. Choose who you keep close to you wisely. Because…

If they do it to other people, they’ll do it to you one day too. (You were right, mom.) And honestly…

I really would rather be alone than in bad, or worse, mediocre company.

Everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to. Really.

Things will get better because they have to.

Eventually, you will get tired of hearing yourself talk about your own problems. (So shut up and do something about it.)

Falling in love gets harder. But the reward gets bigger.

Keep in mind the present you are constructing, it should be the future you want. (Thank you, Cecelia!)

Your paycheck isn’t going to hug you at night, or, a job isn’t everything.

Getting comfortable is quite possibly the worst thing you can do. It’s when your friendships dwindle, love weans and passion flutters away.

This is the shape of my body, I cannot change it. But! I can work on how big that shape is.

The deepest love you have in life might not be for a lover, it might be for a friend.

Fresh flowers & plants really do make a space happier.

Sit with your feelings, don’t wallow in them. (Mom likes to put a 2 week limit on wallowing. Then it’s time to move on.)

To love me is to love my ridiculously loud laugh.

Silence can be uncomfortable, but at times necessary. (Also an old reporter trick for getting people to spill their guts.)

Closure is rare. Learn to move on without it. Savor it when you do get it.

Friendships ebb and flow. The best ones will grow apart and snap back like a rubber band. Don’t be so quick to judge, write people off or burn bridges.

It takes far more courage to let someone love you completely than it does to love another person.

Appreciate what people are capable of giving instead of focusing on what you want from them. It makes friendships, love and work so much easier.

Food (and drink) always tastes better when someone else makes it. (Thanks for all those cheese sandwiches, mom!)

In difficult times or times of conflict, no matter what, just be proud of your actions. You’re the only thing you can control. (Another Cecelia gem.)

Lovahs, what do you think? Relevant? Bullshit? Hopefully you weren’t rolling your eyes too much! And if you were, you probably don’t want to be friends with me IRL ’cause I repeat a lot of this shit to friends when trading advice!

Alright, I’m gonna go play with photoshop trying to make these into pinable posters until I remember I’m not a graphic designer. Let me know what you’ve learned along the way if you’re feelin’ it…

Know what I need? That. I need a beach. I need the rhythmic slosh of water rolling up on the beach. Like a baby with one of those sound machines, I’ll be out like a light. This week has been more jet setting, ending with some family time. Much needed family time. Along the way I’ve met fun people, smart people, annoying people and everything in between which is always great.

Perhaps the best part of going home is hugs from my mother, but then there’s the animals. If you know me you’ve probably heard my description of the symphony of sounds I wake up to (usually way too early) when I’m back at home. First it starts with a consistent thudding of Big Dog’s (he’s almost 100lbs) tail, followed by a slightly less dense thudding of Small Dog’s (he’s only 25lbs) tail beating on the wall of the hallway (conveniently situated by the door to my room). They’re so excited to see everyone awake! Hello! I haven’t seen you in hours! It’s YOU!! Then it’s our two parakeets, Mr. Blue and Jasper, squawking to greet my father who they have imprinted on. All this goes on for the next hour or so making it nearly impossible to ignore and thus, nearly impossible to sleep in. If I can snap pics of these beasts, I will. But for now, on to the links…

Embracing who you are is hard enough in life, but coming out (and being an athlete to boot) adds another layer. Such an endearing young man with a powerful perspective.

Girls need role models, and not of the Disney princess variety.

Behold. My obsession with Game of Thrones, now firmly displayed on my desk at work! I’ve raved about the books for so long (and so adamantly) that my friend Cecelia ended up reading them and loving them just as much. Our shared obsession with Jon Snow and all things Westeros meant receiving a dragon egg (official Game of Thrones merch, btw) for my birthday! Of course I loved it the moment I saw it, but then I got to work and realized it also matched my Rifle Paper Co. coasters, well, magine that moment of excitement!

Despite being a pleasantly slow week, I’m exhausted. I’m looking forward to sleeping in and going to the 14th & U farmers market for some produce. I have an occasion to do some cooking for on Monday and I’m thinking I may go all out! Or I’ll just serve cheese (the best damn cheese!) and crackers. We’ll see. But, on to the weekend reads….

A couple weeks ago I was presenting to a group of AARP field staff about the AARP Social Communications team. After sharing our structure, roles and some tips for rocking at social communications, I was asked, “How did you guys establish yourselves as the experts? How did you become the go-to people for social media at AARP?” It’s not like we had a formula, or were plotting an exacting strategy, but in hindsight there were several things we systematically did to establish our expertise. When I thought back even further to my days in media relations or even my PR agency days, I realized I did the same things to establish myself as the go-to person for any number of subjects or tasks.

Consider this your hit list. Make time for two or three of these things a week and you’ll be well on your way to being “that person who knows how to….” in your organization. Do the items that make the most sense for your role and your organization’s culture, but also consider that being an expert means paving the way, leading, busting down boundaries and that may make you a little bit uncomfortable. That’s okay, and mostly, that’s good! It means you’re stepping out of your comfort zone. But it also means you’re embracing the risk as you put yourself out there and stand up for your ideas.

Always. Be. Selling.

My friend Jenna is in sales. She’s whip smart and she can do the hustle better than anyone I know. But she’s smooth about it – unobtrusive and never makes you feel like you’re hearing a pitch. Listen, no one is going to get behind your idea just because. You have to sell your idea, but more importantly yourself. Jenna’s so good because she understands what she’s selling against. Maybe for one client it’s driving traffic, while for another it’s raising awareness. Depending on their needs she talks about how she can help people achieve their goals.

Understand the people you’re selling to: what makes them tick? Maybe one boss loves numbers and analytics, while another religiously reads the Wall Street Journal and yet another might hate taking meetings but loves grabbing coffee. How you sell yourself and your ideas should be catered to the individual you’re selling to, not yourself.

Share Ideas – With Context

I read more than 300 RSS feeds every day for a reason: sharing. When it comes to sharing articles and information with colleagues and higher ups, the key is context and ease.

In my PR agency days I learned that many of my clients weren’t clicking on the links to news stories I sent them. Bummer. Then I switched up the format of my emails. I copy/pasted the headline of the article into the body of the email, provided a full link to the article and then a copy of the article in its entirety in the body of the email. At the very top I added a sentence or two of intro & context and 2-3 bullets with the key takeaways or questions I needed them to answer.

See, not many people have the time or the interest in reading the things you will send. What are the quick bites? What would you tell them if you were only going two floors in an elevator together? That’s the most important part of the email, well, and a subject line that makes them want to open it. Add value to the article and it shows how you are valuable beyond being an over-glorified newsletter.

Walk The Walk

Don’t just talk about it, be about it. You want to start a social media program for your company? You better have a social media program for yourself. Yep, a program. Think there’s a more streamlined way of printing and mailing? Try it out on yourself first, take note of the cost savings, process and improvements for you alone.

Recruit the willing into your ideas. There are always a few people who are willing to try an idea or go rogue with you. Go for the low hanging fruit – easy wins, small projects and build critical mass around your ideas by actually doing them on a small scale.

Teachable Moments

For those times you want to scream, “I told you guys we should have done that!” Yeah, you knew you were right all along, and just now everyone else realized you were right too. Be gentle, focus on the positive and the future. Don’t lay blame, and definitely don’t be condescending. This is your chance to show the higher ups that you can fix a problem or improve upon a lackluster outcome by implementing that program, plan or process you’ve been selling so hard. Bonus points: work with your team rather than trying to lead the new plan or take it away from them.

Speak Sparingly

A friend just shared this anecdote: if it takes you more than 15 minutes to figure out who the asshole is in a meeting, there’s a good chance it’s you.

Listening! It’s a lost art. Especially at work! You do not need to clamor to make your point first, there are no points for talking louder or faster and there is no rule that you need to speak on every point or even in every meeting. Listen to what’s being said, absorb it – is there a subtext? What are the goals you’re trying to achieve in the meeting/conversation? Who is in the room? What might that mean? – and determine if you have any value to add. No value? Don’t speak. Value? Speak away, my friend!

Message Repetition

This is total PR girl advice. What are your three key points you’re trying to make? You are these three points. Become the three points. Shamelessly repeat the three points. When you speak (sparingly) these are your go-to messages, or what you always bring your audience back to. These points need to speak to your capabilities, strengths or boil down your ideas into salient, easy to digest snippets.

Drive-Bys

Put on your big girl panties, this is going to require you to strap on some extra confidence. I want you to, unannoyingly and unobtrusively, “swing by” influential people’s offices. Sometimes I want you to just say, “Hi!” Sometimes I want you to have a loose idea of something (related to your chosen field of expertise) to chat BRIEFLY about. Sometimes I want you to make friends with their assistant. Are you catching my drift? To be an expert you also need to be physically visible to the people who can help validate you.

If you want to be known as a social media expert, swing by a few times and offer to help a higher up download Twitter to their phone and get all set up. If the person you’re visiting loves reading things on paper, drop off an interesting article you printed out. If they have a sense of humor, or love, I don’t know, buffalos, tell them a joke you heard or mention a cool painting of buffalos on exhibit downtown. This is about personal relationship building that transcends your technical expertise. People work with people they like, not just people who are the smartest or most qualified.

It’s not a science, but try putting a few of these things on your calendar every week at work as a reminder. If you passionately embody your ideas, and aim to share the benefits of them every day with people around you, you’ll become an in-house expert. But remember it’s a slow build – like growing an audience on Twitter – it’s just going to take some time. (So start now!)

The last couple weeks have been a whirlwind of work and fun travel. In two weeks I hit four cities in two, or was it three?, time zones. I always crave some time on the road. I want to leave my routine and my every day. Then, once I’m packing or in line at the airport, all I want is my big, comfy bed back. Am I the only one who does silly things like this? Either way, I got to mash some very cool work related talks and meetups with a family visit and some birthday time in Portland, OR! I ate and drank and laughed my ass off and reflected a bit.

Since I didn’t post while I was jumping from city to city I have so many cool links to share with you guys. Next week I’m back on a normal schedule and I have some great posts in queue – you’ll have to let me know what you think!

Last week I attended paidContent Live, a GigaOM event, in New York City. The conference, focused on tackling the very big, very sexy topic of how to create sustainable models of monetizing, distributing and creating content. When I registered in February I took a look at the speaker list – noting heavy hitters like David Karp, Andrew Ross Sorkin and John Steinberg. I also noted, a speaker list that was, at the time, 80% male.

I wanted to give the conference organizers the benefit of the doubt. With two months to go, maybe they were still working on shoring up panelists, and maybe those panelists would be women. However, when I showed up, that was very clearly not the case. The program for the event revealed that there were only five women speaking at the event. Five. At a nine hour event with over 40 speakers.

Using the event’s official hashtag #pclive I, and others, broached the issue. Presumably conference organizers were monitoring the feed since several moderators and even the emcee for the event were encouraging attendees to “continue the conversation” and asked us to not “just share quotes, but explore other topics” on the feed. I quickly found that I wasn’t alone – several attendees noted the lack of gender diversity on stage, and it wasn’t just women. This is my storify of the conversation that happened on Twitter throughout the day:

[View the story "paidContent Live: Where Were The Women? " on Storify]

I’m writing this post for two reasons: 1. it’s my open letter to the conference organizers , which I’ll also send to them directly, and 2. to ask anyone who reads it to remember they can help make these conferences more diverse.

To the paidContent Live organizers:

Don’t you think having a diverse group of panelists and moderators makes for a better discussion? Every time there was a woman on stage, she challenged the status quo in some way and offered an alternative view, or unique insight. That’s not a coincidence.

Did you not consider that having a speaker list that was 90%+ white males might make women and minorities in the audience feel even slightly alienated? There were women in the audience, sure, but I couldn’t help but note when I walked in to register that audience and speaker list alike were overwhelmingly homogenous. I consider myself a fairly confident person but let’s just say, next year, I may be bringing back up.

What did your recruiting process look like for setting up panels? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you probably tried to get more women on stage. But only reaching out to your first, or even second, circle of contacts does not constitute trying. Give Lean In a read, I’ll spare you the litany of statistics that show it may be harder to find outstanding women to discuss the topics you addressed last week. We’re not exactly walking around tooting our horns and declaring ourselves experts

Lastly, if you’re taking everything I, and others, have said to heart – we’re also here to help. Talk to Rachel Sklar or Cindy Gallop, they’ll hook you up with some smart sisters.

To conference attendees & speakers:

See something? Say something. A woman I met at paidContent Live told me that, while she noticed the gender disparity on stage, it simply didn’t make her as angry as I was. She noted that this is how most conferences are, so she was just used to it. I had to point out, that while I was certainly stewing on it, I wasn’t “angry.” And that conferences would go on being that way if no one ever said anything, angry or not. Point out the lack of gender diversity in a tweet, to the registration desk or to the conference organizers – whatever forum you’re most comfortable with.

Leverage your influence. At some point, many of us will be asked to sit on a panel at a conference – large or small. Take that moment to leverage the influence you have. Ask the conference organizer what the female to male ratio of speakers is. Ask them how they plan to recruit more women if things aren’t looking so good. Tell them you’d love to speak on their panel, but you won’t be able to do so unless a more concerted effort to recruit women is made, and that you can help them. Make your participation contingent upon more than a good faith effort.

Help organizers find smart, capable women by promoting smart, capable women. The number one thing people (including women) said to me at the conference was, “Maybe these were just the best people to discuss the topics. Maybe the women they found weren’t as qualified.” This is a laughably bad argument. In all of the world of blogging, publishing, marketing, advertising and communications, there are no women who are as qualified as the 40 some-odd male speakers I saw that day? Ah, no. Again, read Lean In for the litany of depressing stats about why women aren’t the self-promotion machines men often are, but you can help a sister out. Send internal emails touting great projects/results yielded by women you work with. Tweet insightful articles written by women, tag those women in your tweets, and tag influential reporters/execs/organizers too! Use your Facebook feed to share initiatives and companies led by women with your friends. Let’s squash this idea that there are no women who are as qualified as the most qualified man in any industry to sit on any panel.

I learned a lot at paidContent Live, and have even told my boss and other executives at AARP that they should attend next year. The topics discussed and the issues raised were, no doubt, incredibly valuable. But the glaring lack of diversity on stage that day distracted me somewhat, and I did feel the conversations would have been even better if there had been more diversity. Hopefully the organizers take the issue seriously and next year, they’ll have an even better event for it.

My mom sent me this photo of an Arizona sunset from our back yard. It kinda sums up everything I love about the state, and definitely has me jonesin’ for some home time. And some sun. And sleep. How about sleeping in the sun? Oh that’s always the best. Basically I need summer. I’ll eat those words in about three months, but whatever.

I’m on a mad travel dash next week, which will be so much fun and also so exhausting. I have my Instapaper loaded up with about a million articles to read, and a crap ton of Doctor Who, Fringe and Neverwhere to watch. I’m going to be the most interesting, nerdiest person after all these flights! But for now, on to the links…

You guys, the Beastie Boys have been around for so. Long. This Adam Yauch tribute video (and related art project) is pretty bad ass.

In times of hardship and tragedy, we all want to say the right thing to the afflicted person. The “Ring Theory” is a handy guide for what you can say and to who.

Anthony Bourdain. Speechless.

Here’s an interesting cocktail: The Tallulah, which contains coke, peanuts and whiskey.

More pics of adorable animals wearing clothes.

Paris: 1900/2013. I think I like 1900 better.

Calling Al Gore! This is how you get me into climate change: how it’s hurting coffee producers.

What Ali Wore. A seriously dapper gent.

The world’s rudest hand gestures. I have a few I could add to this list.

Sad Desk Lunch is sad.

George Plimpton on public speaking: “The more you sweat in advance, the less you’ll have to sweat once you appear on stage.” So true George, I’ve done enough sweating on stage to know the feeling.

How To: Be The Most Tolerable Couple In The World. I’ll add: not incessantly using your partner as a reason/excuse why you have to leave events early. That doesn’t make me like them, or you, any more.

The Panel Crasher likes to crash DC panel discussions for the…free food. Those familiar with DC event culture know you can sustain yourself on panel food for weeks on end.

Last but not least, here’s a song for your weekend. Cinerama’s “Your Charms” is sweet and vulnerable and is the perfect soundtrack by which to have your morning cuppa. Have a lovely weekend, lovahs!

Honestly, Mother Nature, what the eff is going on with you? It was gorgeous and warm and sunshiny all week. I even refrained from calling in sick to work from my roofdeck and get a good base tan. I told myself, “Friday! Friday, you can work and bask and lay like the Arizona sun-soaking lizard you are!” And then I woke up to this. Whatever. I’m not bitter.

This weekend should be fun though. If you’re an American University student check out my panel at the Social Learning Summit: You Are What You Tweet! Other than that I plan on treating myself to some 2Amys, sunning myself (with plenty of 60 SPF and a big hat on) and celebrating my friend’s nuptials. Love and sun – that’s the theme for the weekend. Now, on to the links…

Thug Kitchen. It’s a thing. Sugar snap peas, oh shit!

Mad Men: Then vs Now.

Choosing the right career – are you a promotion-focused person or a prevention-focused person.

Cup of Jo is doing a vocabulary challenge. I like to modify this game by asking my Twitter friend Rich for British slang I can use on the daily.

Hey Girl, don’t forget to ask for a raise.

A flower potluck sounds SO FUN! Related: this is how I know I’m getting older. But, clearly, there would be pink champagne involved.

Hilarious: How Animals Eat Their Food.

Guys. Guys! Come on! Pomegranate seeds DO NOT GO IN GUACAMOLE! Shit.

Subways of North America. I want this as a print.

One of our bad ass photographers at work has a fabulous project called All Thrifty States. She’s on an east coast road trip documenting the thrift stores of America. Follow the #allthriftystates journey on Twitter, Instagram and like her Facebook page for updates on the project.

And of course: 5 ways to update thrift store art.

Ladies everywhere will squeeee for this one: Hukkster, an online sale tracker and alert system. Sorry bank account :(

Have a wonderful weekend lovahs! When you’re sipping your cup of joe, remember these 15 things…
